Scirpus validus

Soft-stem Bulrush

Scirpus validus (Soft-stem Bulrush)

Soft-stem Bulrush might first be noticed as a large colony of stems growing in water, the stems topped by a hanging inflorescence.

Soft-stem Bulrush is a bulrush sedge with stems to eight feet tall. The stems are very rounded, triangular-shaped and light green in color. The smooth stems are up to one inch wide at the base, gradually tapering upward. There are no leaf blades, just sheaths, with inflorescence at stem tip. The characteristic hanging clusters of spikelets appear as a continuation of the stem.
